Affordable Laptops: A False Economy

The allure of low-priced laptops is undeniable. However, the old adage "you get what you pay for" holds particularly true in this realm. While these devices might seem like a bargain initially, their limitations can quickly turn them into costly headaches. Your email is flooded with deals on these Laptops daily and we will explain why these should be avoided.

At the heart of the issue lies the hardware. Budget laptops often come equipped with underpowered processors like the Intel N4 or N5 series, designed for basic tasks. These chips struggle when faced with anything beyond simple web browsing or document editing. Coupled with meagre RAM, typically 4GB or less, these laptops quickly become frustratingly slow. Attempting to run multiple applications or demanding software is akin to driving a snail-paced car uphill. Adding to this, many of these Laptops cannot have RAM upgraded due to the RAM being built into the motherboard. You will also spend extra money on the upgrade of the RAM at a later stage if its possible, as a technician will most likely have to do the labour.

Limitations of N4 and N5 processors: These processors are designed for efficiency rather than raw power. While they can handle everyday tasks, they struggle with demanding applications such as video editing, gaming, or running multiple programs simultaneously.

Impact of low RAM: Affordable laptops often come with limited RAM, typically 4GB or less. While sufficient for basic tasks, low RAM can cause noticeable slowdowns when running multiple applications or demanding programs. This is because the computer has to constantly swap data between RAM and slower storage, leading to performance bottlenecks.

Furthermore, the inclusion of slower storage drives, often traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), exacerbates the performance woes. While not directly impacting processing speed, HDDs are significantly slower than solid-state drives (SSDs) in accessing data, leading to sluggish load times and overall system responsiveness.

In the long run, an affordable laptop can prove to be a false economy. Its limitations will inevitably frustrate users, leading to a decreased productivity and a potential need for a replacement sooner rather than later. While the initial outlay might be lower, the hidden costs in terms of time, frustration, and potential for future expenses can outweigh the savings.

Investing in a slightly higher-priced laptop with better specifications will not only provide a more satisfying user experience but also likely extend the device's lifespan, making it a more cost-effective choice in the long term. At BuySave we highly recommend you look at our Mini PC's as they are very affordable for the specification you choosing to buy.
